BILDEV Talks 3

The third BILDEV Talk featured Sajjad Rizvi from Exeter University, who delivered a lecture titled “Two Schools of Metaphysics in 18th Century India.” Focusing on the complex intellectual environment of early modern South Asia, Rizvi examined two prominent traditions of Islamic metaphysics that shaped scholarly discourse in the region. His talk traced how these schools engaged with classical sources while responding to their historical and cultural context. The event offered insight into the plurality of metaphysical inquiry in Muslim India, highlighting local reinterpretations of inherited concepts such as being, necessity, and divine attributes. In doing so, Rizvi opened a path for rethinking how philosophical traditions travel, transform, and reemerge in new geographies.
